Memorial Day May 31, 2010

Memorial Day is a day of rememberance for those who have died in our nation's service.
It's a day of coming together to honor those who gave their all.
There is a lot of different stories about where and when this began and by whom.
May 30th was the day it was first observed, but someone wanted it changed to the
fourth Monday in May, thus a three-day weekend was born! Another day off from work!

Years ago, every little town or village had their own observance, with a parade and
flags flying. Patriotism was alive then. Little flags with stars were displayed in the windows of
families who had lost a loved one. People planted American Flags, and sometimes red geraniums or
poppies, on the graves of those who gave the ultimate sacrafice.

Let's all fly the American Flag on May 31st just to show that patriotism is still alive in
this great country of ours. Stop and silently remember those who, because of their
sacrifice, have given us freedom we all enjoy in our land.

Smiles and Blessings,
Happy Memorial Day to all who read this!

The Snow Image Story

This image is from an 1899 Fourth Reader that has been in my family for years.
The Snow Image was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne; here are a few words from that
story describing this picture.

"At this instant a flock of snowbirds came flitting through the air. As was very natural, they avoided
Violet and Peony (children in the story). But--and this looked strange,--they flew at once to the
white-robed child, fluttered eagerly about her head, alighted on her shoulders, and seemed to claim
her as an old acquaintance.
She, on her part, was evidently as glad to see these little birds, old Winter's Grandchildren, as
they were to see her, and welcomed them by holding out both her hands. Hereupon they each
and all tried to alight on her two palms and ten small fingers and thumbs, crowding one another off,
with an immense fluttering of their tiny wings. One dear little bird nestled tenderly in her bosom;
another put its bill to her lips. They were as joyous, all the while, and seemed as much in their element
as you may have seen them when sporting with a snowst0rm."

I know the winter has long gone (?)! But I love this old picture and these beautiful words.
Maybe you could find this story and read the entire piece. It isn't very long.

Smiles and Blessings on this beautiful day, Friends,
Nancy

Summer Splash at our Library

I thought I would share this craft that we are planning for our children's summer program at our county library.

I took some pics today to show you how this is made.
We are using recyclables...old telephone book, packing paper from boxes, and old magazines.
This is a good way to show kids how we can use some of the things that would be cast off.
Saving some resources by going green!

Smiles and Blessings, Friends,
Nancy

Colorful Scales for our Fluffy Fish

One inch circle cutter and some of the circles that are cut from recycled magazines.
These are the fish scales...very colorful!

Here is the fluffy fish...all stuffed and covered with scales.
He will have a jiggley eye, lips and fins will all be painted and papered
with more recyclables.

Our kids should have fun making this!
They can hang it from a ribbon, string or fishing line!

Our bulletin board will be made to look like an aquarium and all the fish will be
swimming around...some green seaweed and coral at the bottom, to make it more realistic.
The kids can make the seaweed and coral from more recycled paper.

Will show pics after all this takes place..starting in the month of June.

Fish Craft for Summer Splash for Library

Fish Pattern
Our children's summer program at our library is titled "Summer Splash."
It will have books and crafts on things relating to the water.
One of the crafts will be this stuffed fish..as you will see from the following.

Cut two sides from paper. I am recycling paper from packages of books we receive at our library.
Use whatever paper you have...paper bags, wrapping etc.
This craft uses all recycled paper.

Two pieces cut and started with the stapling.

Stuffed fish! I used pages from old telephone book.
Crumple and stuff...or you can use a paper shredder to shred pages
then stuff. This does make the fish "fluffier."
In case you like fluffy fish!!

Smiles and Blessings, Friends,
Nancy

Mother's Day Sunday May 9th

This Sunday, May 9th, is Mother's  Day.
A holiday, that all over this United States of America, we will be honoring Mothers.
May 8, 1914, the U. S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson, signed a proclamation declaring the first National Mother's Day.
Grafton Church, West Virginia, held the first celebration and is now the International Mother's Day Shrine and is a National Historical Landmark.
Carnations are the flower that has come to represent Mother's Day.
Mother's Day is celebrated in many countries throughout the world.

Remember your Mother on this day and honor her, even if she is no longer with you on this earth,
think about her and send up a prayer for her.  Thank her for all the years she gave you.
Your family is all you have...they are LOVE!

Smiles and Blessings, Friends and Mothers everywhere!

Mother

A Mother is a Mother still,
                         The holiest thing alive.

April New Magazines

Three new magazines I found at Books a Million over the weekend.
They are all wonderful! There is so much inspiration and  photos in all of these they
are wonderful. I just soak all of it in! I go over my magazines time and again to see if I
missed anything.

Where Women Create has an article about Karen Valentine, who is a blog designer, and
who designed my blog. I am so happy with my design. She's a genius. Thank you, Karen!

Happy Tuesday friends.
Smiles and Blessings,

Nancy
